Designing professional learning for adult learners should be approached from a transformational lens. The PD Book: 7 Habits that Transform Professional Development is a great book for being more intentional when designing learning experiences for educators. The authors suggest the acronym PARTY to create transformative professional development. As a campus principal and district administrator, I found it useful to create a professional learning focus and develop an yearly plan. Here is a campus professional learning plan template that was useful for my team.
- Purpose – determine buy-in and share purpose, build buy-in to purpose
- Audience – attend to learner needs, engage in emotions and build psychological safety, navigate power, act on principals of adult learning
- Routines – plan, design intentionally and attend to details
- Technique – execute the plan; facilitate adaptively
- You – know yourself, be clear on who you want to be, bring your best self
I created the following book talk presentation to give an overview of this book along with a participant processing document to model the PARTY process.
